Frequently Asked Questions
What is Supported Independent Living?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS-funded support that provides assistance with daily tasks for people who need ongoing help to live as independently as possible. SIL covers the support costs, not housing costs like rent or groceries.
Who is eligible for SIL under the NDIS?
SIL eligibility is based on functional support needs rather than diagnosis. The NDIA assesses whether SIL is reasonable and necessary by considering how significantly your disability affects daily living, whether informal supports are sufficient, and whether SIL aligns with your goals. A functional capacity assessment from an occupational therapist is usually required.
Do all SIL providers need to be NDIS registered?
Yes. From 1 July 2026, all Supported Independent Living providers must be registered with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. This applies regardless of how a participant's plan is managed.
Does SIL funding cover rent and living expenses?
No. SIL funding covers support worker costs only, such as assistance with personal care, meal preparation, and household tasks. It does not cover rent, groceries, utilities, or general household bills.
How do I apply for SIL funding?
Talk to your support coordinator or local area coordinator, arrange a functional capacity assessment with an occupational therapist, choose a registered SIL provider and get a formal SIL quote, then submit your request to the NDIA with all supporting evidence. Contact Tenax Supports on 03 7018 8666 for assistance.
