Managing an NDIS plan involves more than choosing providers; it requires careful budget pacing. Under recent scheme improvements, the NDIA has enforced strict budget periods and spending rules. These guidelines restrict how and when participants can spend their funding, ensuring plans last for their entire duration without running dry prematurely.
A budget period is a designated interval of time (typically 3, 6, or 12 months) during which you are allocated a set portion of your total NDIS plan budget. For example, if you have a 3-year plan with $90,000 in Core supports, the NDIA may divide this into six-monthly budget periods of $15,000. You can only access the funds allocated for the active period, preventing you from overspending your plan early.
Depending on whether your plan is managed under the legacy system or the new PACE platform, unused funds may not automatically roll over to your next budget period. To avoid losing access to allocated support funding, work with a Plan Manager to monitor your expenditure pacing.
